God's Portrait Of A Man After His Heart


I. Background
   A. Israel wanted a King like all of the other nations - they were not happy with God leading
   B. Saul was chosen as the first king
      i) he looked and acted like a King
      ii) but his heart was not after God - his sin caused God to forsake him
   C. Samuel was told to go to Jesse's house and anoint the new King - I Sam 16
   D. God picked the youngest of 7 boys , David , as the King at age 15
   E. The Bible only twice says a man's heart was " after God's heart " - David (I Sam 13:14 ;  Acts 13:22 )

II. David's Background
   A. Great great Grandmother was the prostitute Rahab
   B. His great great great .. Grandfather was Judah who had sex with hid daughter-in-law
   C. His great Grandmother was Naomi the Moabitess who married Boaz
   D. His  was Jesse  ; David was born in Bethlehem
   E. He was a shepherd boy ; he was short , ruddy complected and about 15 years old
   F. He was strong , brave and loved the outdoors
   G. He spent much time alone with God

III. God's Portrait Of A Man After God's  Heart
   A. Start training as a young man
   B. Teach him to depend on God and be brave in adversity
   C. Man looks at the outside of a man - God looks at the heart
   D. Attributes of David's heart
      i) humble - Ps 51:7
      ii) tender - II Sam 24:10
      iii) integrity - Ps 78:12 ; I Kings 9:4
      iv) obedient - Kings 14:8
      v) penitent  - II Sam 12
      vi) love God's word - Ps 40:8

IV. Take Homes
   A. A heart like God's heart will make us faithful ; it will make happy men and GREAT Fathers !
