THE GOOD SAMARITAN
LK 10:25-37
I. Background
A. An expert on the Law of Moses asked the Lord "what shall I do to inherit Eternal Life" ?
B. He was trying to catch Jesus in a contradiction and justify himself
C. Instead of answering him directly Jesus taught a lesson on Love and how to show Love
D. The Lawyer said to be saved we:
i) love God with everything we have AND
ii) love our Neighbor as ourselves Lev 19:18
E. Jesus said - you go do this
F. To try and limit his obedience, he asked "who is my neighbor " ?
II. Parable Of The Good Samaritan
A. A “certain” man was traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho and was jumped by robbers that nearly beat him to death
B. A Priest and Levite passed on the other side to not be involved - they knew the "words" of the Law
C. A Samaritan " saw " him and helped the man
i) his nationality or religion did not matter - he stopped to help
ii) he took his clothes and bound his wounds
iii) he poured wine in his wounds to kill germs
iv) he poured oil in the wounds to soften them
v) he put him on his donkey and carried him to the Inn
vi) he paid him 2 coins and promised to pay any other charges when he returned
D. Jesus asked the Lawyer who was the neighbor ?
i) he responded " he who showed mercy "
ii) Jesus told him to go and do the same
III. Lessons From The Parable
A. Knowing God's Law is not enough - we must do it!
B. We don't happen to be a Good Samaritan - we must decide to be one
C. Being a Good Samaritan is just reflecting Jesus
D. A Neighbor is anyone in need
E. Being a Good Samaritan is no replacement for Jesus
