GOD ANOINTS DAVID
I Samuel 16
I. The background for the anointing of David
A. Samuel was the last of the judges established by God to rule Israel .
B. The people demanded a king instead. I Samuel 8:4-6
C. God told Samuel that the people were rejecting Him, not Samuel.
D. God chose Saul as the first king. I Samuel 10:9-10
E. At first Saul was faithful but later disobeyed God. I Samuel 15:13-23
II. The responsibility for anointing belongs to God. I Samuel 16:1-3
A. Man's way is to choose based on outward signs.
B. God's way to choose based on a person's heart.
III. The requirements for anointing are God's.
A. "For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth,
to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect
toward Him." II Chronicles 16:9a
B. Saul had the strength of a warrior but David was God's servant.
Psallm 89:18-20
IV. The response to anointing is God's.
A. David was anointed at age 16 but became king at age 30.
B. God often teaches us lessons in private for our public use.
V. Summary
A. God is at work even if we are not aware of it.
B. God is at work in a way we may not understand.
C. God is working on our behalf even if we don't know about it
or understand it.
