WHAT DOES ARCHEOLOGY SAY ABOUT THE BIBLE?
I. Archeology is the science of recovering past civilizations by uncovering the remains of those civilizations by using digs, satellites, subsurface radar and carbon dating.
II. Critics say that Old Testament events never actually happened.
A. The Genesis 10 story of Sodom and Gomorrah was substantiated when
archeologists found mountains of salt and ash in Ashon near the
Dead Sea.
B. The Elba tablet, dated 2300 B.C. lists people like Adam, Noah,
and Abraham as well as 260 other Bible people and places.
C. In 1976 Archeologists found several golden chariot wheels and axels
in the Red Sea which were dated at the time of Ramses II proving
the flight of the Israelites from Egypt in Exodus 14.
D. The Amulet Scroll, dated 700 B.C. was found in 1979 containing the name
Yaweh (Jehovah) dispelling the myth that God's name is in no
other place but the Bible.
E. In 1880 an underground tunnel dated about 700 B.C. was found
confirming Hezekiah's tunnel. II Kings 20
III. Critics say that these New Testament events never happened.
A. Critics don't believe that Jesus drove out the money changers from the Temple
and that the Gentiles were not permitted to enter the Temple area but
archeologists found a warning stone which says "Gentiles are not allowed any
further in the temple area."
B. Critics don't believe that Christ was crucified as in the account in John 19,
but archeologists from Pedosa University in Jerusalem found an ankle bone
belonging to Yohan which had a 7 inch spike driven into a knot on a cross,
showing that the legs were not always broken beneath the knees to hasten death.
C. Critics believe that there is no mention of Pilate outside of the Bible, but in 1961
an inscription was found which said "Pontius Pilate, Prefect of Judea."
D. In Corinth today there is a stone which says "Erastus, Public Works Director
paid for this street." which confirms the existence of Erastus in Romans 16:23.
E. The Dead Sea Scrolls found in 1947 contain Bible manuscripts which are
1000 years older than the oldest manuscripts from which the Bible is taken but t
he scroll containing the book of Isaiah is word for word like your Bible,
IV. Take Homes
A. The Bible is true because God wrote it, not because we can confirm it.
B. Faith in God's word is not pottery and bones.
C. Believing the Word and putting it into practice is the only thing
that will save our souls.
