FROM PRISON TO PALACE

Genesis 39:20-41:1-45

  I.  After Potiphar's wife lied Joseph was put into the Royal Prison. 
Genesis 39:20

A.  The Lord was still with Joseph.

B. Joseph found favor in the jailer's eyes.

C. The jailer put Joseph in charge of the jail.

 II . Two of Pharaoh's servants were also put into prison. Genesis 40:1-23

A.  The butler dreamed he would serve Pharaoh and the baker dreamed that the birds ate his baked goods.

B.  Joseph, by God's direction, told the butler that he would

           return to service and told the baker that he would be hanged in three days.

C.  Both of Joseph's interpretations came true.

D.  Joseph asked the butler to tell Pharaoh about him.

III. Pharaoh had two dreams.  Genesis 41:1-38

A.  Pharaoh dreamed that seven fat cows were eaten by seven thin cows but they got no fatter.

B.  Pharaoh dreamed that seven fat ears of grain were consumed by seven thin ears but they got no fatter.

C.  With God's help Joseph said that the dreams meant that

           there would be seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine.

  D.  Joseph told Pharaoh to store 20% of each year's harvest to be used during the seven years of famine.

IV. Pharoah elevated Joseph to be his Prime Minister. Genesis 41:39-45

  A.  Pharaoh gave Joseph his ring, a robe, a gold chain, and commanded that he ride in the second chariot.

  B.  Joseph ruled over all the land of Egyp

C. In 13 years Joseph had gone from the favored son of a rich man, cast into a pit, sold into slavery, and prison to the second most powerful man on earth.

D. God's plan that people would bow to Joseph came true.

V.  Take homes

A.  Problems promote spiritual maturity.  "God laid iron in Joseph's soul". Psalm 105:17-18

B.  Problems prove integrity which was always there.

C.  Problems produce a sense of dependency on God Genesis 39:20-21

D.  Problems prepare us to minister to others.  Genesis 40:6-7
