JOSEPH IS TESTED

Genesis 39

 

  I.  Background

      A.  Joseph was the favored son of Jacob.

      B.  God sent Joseph dreams showing him that he would be the leader over men.

      C.  The envy of Joseph's brothers caused him to be in slavery in Egypt .

      D.  Joseph was sold to Pharaoh's Captain of the Guard, Potiphar.

 II. Test of Prosperity - verses 1-6

     A.  Joseph advanced from common slave to chief operating officer of Potiphar's house.

     B.  Potiphar's affairs prospered in every way.

     C.  Joseph gave God the credit.

III. Test of Purity - verses 7-12

     A.  Joseph was well built and handsome.

     B.  Mrs. Potiphar lusted after him.

          1.  The temptation was a surprise.

          2.  The temptation was day after day.

          3.  The temptation was a secret.

     C.  Joseph did not fall for the temptation.

           1.  He had conviction before temptation.

           2.  He knew love involved loyalty to Potiphar and God.

IV. Test of Persecution - verses 13-23

A. Just as things were going better than they had in ten years, the Hebrew Prince was put into prison.
(pit, slavery, prison)
B . God's favor caused Joseph to be put in charge of the prison under the keeper of the prison, just has he
had been second in charge for Potiphar


V.  Take Homes

        A.  Be faithful in little things; God will bless you with more.

        B.  Trust God regardless of present circumstances; there are better things ahead.
