A COSTLY LESSON
Joshua 9

  I.  The story

      A.  The Gibeonites were afraid of Joshua and knew they could not

defeat Israel .  Verse 3

      B.  They plotted to deceive Israel into agreeing to a peace treaty.  Verses 4-5

      C.  They met Joshua and the people and asked for peace.  Verses 6-13

The Israelites samples their provisions to see if their story was true and made a treaty with them. Verses 14-15


  II. The Israelites did not inquire of the Lord.  Verse 14

      A.  They trusted their instincts instead of asking God.

      B.  This caused them to break God's command not to make a treaty with
their enemies.


III. The results of the story Verses 18-23

      A.  Joshua kept his word.

      B.  Joshua then obeyed God.

IV. What have I learned?

      A.  It is a mistake for me to trust myself and not God's word.

      B.  Trusting God is always the right thing to do even if I have been deceived.

      C.  It is wise to consult Godly people.  Proverbs 1:5

      D.  I should seek God's will before I make a commitment.

      E.  How do I seek God's will?  Romans 12:12

           1.  I live a changed life.  (a living sacrifice)

           2.  I stop listening to the world.  (be not conformed by the world)

           3.  I give my mind to God.  (renewal of your mind)

THEN you may understand what is the good, acceptable and perfect
will of God.
